As we’ve gotten back into events that we haven’t done in a while, I find myself having to approach them differently.
The event the Rockford Aces hosted last night, for example, ran since 2012. In 2019 it had to be canceled unexpectedly, so after seven years of running it, there was a three year break. That means that literally none of my students had experienced it – let alone helped run it.
So instead of my usual, “Remember how we do this?” coupled with “Newer members, pair with a returning member”, I have to say, basically, “Pause for download.” Sit and listen while I paint the picture, give you as much information as I can, and basically reinvent the entire operation.
It’s exhausting. That’s what I came to say. In 2020 I couldn’t wait to have regular events again. Now, I can’t wait to get to an event that we did last year, so that someone besides me remembers it.
