I’ve been working on a couple of different potential Virtual Choir projects, and while each one has different parameters and processes, I wanted to share the basic procedure I’ve been working through. Here is my to-do list before and after recording. Lots of people are considering trying a virtual choir […]
The best ideas haven’t been proposed yet. The best solutions are yet to be discovered. I’m speaking specifically of the best solutions to what K-12 choral educators should be doing for their students right now, but the idea works in lots of contexts. I and my colleagues did what we […]
If something is durable, it’s meant to be reliably stable for a long period of time. It lasts, and it lasts despite wear and tear. If you are comfortable in your day-to-day, then you’ve build in some durability into your life. But durability has its limits. Replace regularly scheduled school […]

As with every other music educator I know, my household has dealt with its fair share of cancellations in the name of social distancing. In just the last twenty-four hours, we have had the following happen: Moving to online-only until at least April 3 for my GRCC Shades of Blue students […]
If I have a question about a piece of music, I ask an expert – ideally the composer if possible, and if not, then a specific stylistic expert. I don’t presume that I have the specialist knowledge, and I don’t assume that anyone with an opinion about the music has […]
One of my composition students is having the first live read of a piece he’s composed this week. The first read of the piece, and the first read of his life. As we finished our lesson today, I urged him to keep his mind really open during the rehearsal, and […]
