Out of Your Control

Snow Days are a wonderful – and rude – reminder.

I’m writing this from home, instead of just wrapping up a collaborative Holiday Collage Concert with my colleagues. The weather shut down most of the schools in my county, and roads were not reliable enough to hold the concert.

Humans can tend to feel like we’re in control. In every domain we involve ourselves with, we have profoundly impacted our environment. We have control in family situations, in classroom situations, on the road, in our life choices.

Only we don’t, really. The world still has something to say.

Snow Days are the best semi-regular reminder of this fact. Sometimes the weather serves up more snow than we can manage.

It’s good to feel in control. And it’s good to remember, now and then, that you don’t have complete control of anything. Sometimes it’s out of your control.

Do I like this fact? No, I’m sorry for my students and their parents that tonight’s concert was cancelled. And in general, I don’t like the feeling of helplessness – of being out of control. But it’s a fact.

Thanks to today’s Snow Day for the reminder.

I write about Snow Days fairly regularly – there’s a lot to say! Read more here.
