One Last Look

How do you do your “one last look” at a new project?

Even thought I do my music writing almost all on computer (sometimes some sketches are done with a pencil and paper), I feel like I always catch an error or two if I only edit it digitally. Printing and looking at the score always helps me find things I didn’t catch on the monitor.

Likewise, when I’m checking other projects, I find it useful to create a mechanized cross-check. It’s not written out, but it’s a sort of checklist before I send it. Otherwise, I almost always catch a typo just after I send it to print.

The more mechanized it is, the more likely I am to find an error – because I stop viewing my project through the creative lens and look at it through a new, and hopefully more objective lens.

The more creative the project, the more you need to set aside some time to step back and look at it objectively. Mechanize that one last look to make sure everything is the way you want it.
