On a Chilly February Day

It was awfully cold here in Michigan, but my dog is a winter dog, so she was delighted to go on a 2 mile walk this morning at -3ºF.

Over the last two years, she has drilled home this important lesson to me: winter is a lot better if you get out into it.

So many things seem forbidding until you start. Listening back to my voices lessons seemed impossible, but if I had just gotten into it, I would have improved much faster as a singer. Daily practice for a sixth grade band member might feel incredibly challenging – all those squeaks and squawks – but get into it, and you’ll grow amazingly fast. I’m sure if I ever actually get around to reading Proust, it will seem much easier once I get started.

What are you avoiding doing because it seems as forbidding as -12ºF windchills? Take a lesson from wise Scandinavian’s who say, “No bad weather; just bad clothing.” Bundle up, and get into whatever it is. You’ll be better for it.
