Not For Me Right Now

I love to describe art that I don’t connect with with the generous expression “It’s not for me.” Maybe that expression doesn’t go far enough, though.

Often it happens that you rediscover and connect deeply with music that previously “wasn’t for you.” It’s that the music hadn’t come at the right time.

Maybe it’s music that requires a certain way of listening. Maybe it’s music that requires a certain type of life experience. Maybe it’s music that requires a certain artistic frame of reference. Maybe it’s music that requires you to have listened to another piece first.

Maybe saying a certain work of art “is not for me” doesn’t go far enough. Try saying, “it’s not for me right now.”

And then come back to it later, ready to experience it with fresh senses.
