Not Being Mozart

Not being Mozart is freeing, not frustrating.

There is a mindset out there that people who are around a Mozart, but aren’t themselves at his generational brilliance, will feel jealousy or a sense of personal failure. Call it Salieri Syndrome.

But not being Mozart gives you so much freedom to explore. It gives you freedom to head in completely different directions and try unexpected things. It takes away the pressure to be writing for posterity, and allows you to write what moves you.

I’m not jealous of those brilliant musical minds. I’m happy to make the music I make, the way I want to make it, and not worry about living up to some expectation of brilliance, either internal or external.
