A significant part of any creator’s life falls into the category of “Not Being Creative.” Responsibilities in the home, family, or community are in that category, but so are the many non-creative aspects of any creative project. Billing, email, promotion, negotiations, “networking“.
I admit to feeling guilty when I let my “Not Being Creative” responsibilities interfere with time to create. But I also work hard to accept these necessary parts of life and to do my best to be efficient at them, so that when it comes time to create I am primed and energized.
I also think it’s valuable to recognize that even “Not Being Creative” can have creative benefits. Mental creation can happen when doing dishes or taking a walk. (Provided I remember not to constantly fill my ears with podcasts…) “Not Being Creative” times are also perfect for refilling the well – gaining inspiration in whatever form speaks to me. And if I accept that creations have to come from somewhere, then these “Not Being Creative” times are excellent opportunities to collect ideas, images, and moments that I can transform into my art.
