No Rehearsal

I hesitate to say it, but sometimes the best rehearsal is no rehearsal.

When the ensemble is very tired, I’m all for the rehearsal where we push to the far side of tired and find new strength and determination. I’m all for the rehearsal where we don’t move down the field musically but practice team building and human connection.

I’m all for these rehearsals, but it might be a better idea, on occasion, to cancel. If your ensemble is guaranteed to be exhausted, the gift of time to rest can be more valuable than the time spent together.

I canceled my rehearsal today, and I think it was the right choice. My gift in return is to plan an extra efficient next rehearsal with them. We’ll make up for lost time when everyone is rested and ready to work – and today’s reprieve will help them get there.
