I shared two options for a notation question yesterday.
Neither were good. Option A had a motion from C-sharp to C-flat (looks like a unison, sound like a major second) and had a pedal note move back and forth from G-flat to F-sharp. The other, worse, option revoked a middle chord to a B-double-flat sixth chord. Ugly, ugly.
The music itself works very well. The notation, not so much. It was a great reminder that our notation system is fallible. Not every good sounding thing can be notated into a good looking thing.
We do well to not only think of music as something that can be written down well. There’s lots of good music that can’t be written at all.
Good, clear notation should be the goal of every writer of music; but if you can’t get there with any options, just remember that the system is fallible.
