Resolve to make your teaching more human.
It’s not just about digital technology, though that is part of it. Students are starved for human connection as they are ever more engaged in the digital world.
It’s not just about job security, though that is part of it. As computer teaching will continue to improve, a teacher’s expertise in relating to students as a fellow human will become more desirable.
It’s not just because it makes your teaching better, though that’s a big part of it. The best teaching and the best learning both happen when you make human connections.
Those are all important but in the end, it comes down to this: how you treat other humans is everything. It doesn’t matter what the relationship is, prioritize how you treat with them as another human. Then get done what you need to get done in that context. Grading, rehearsing, coaching, leading: all can be done within the sphere of humanity.
Every year, every semester, every week I resolve to put my humanity first.
