If all were as we planned it, we would be at the Awards Ceremony for the World Choir Games today with 45 of our Rockford High School students.
Of course, that wasn’t meant to be, and we cut our music-making tremendously short in March.
But I deeply miss sharing this special event with my students. More than 500 choirs were scheduled to attend, mostly European, but from dozens of countries on every continent. It is the best chance I know to make my students really feel like they are part of a global community, and especially to feel like there are people from every part of the globe who are just as inspired by singing together as they are. It was never about the competition, though the Olympic quality of the event is what brings so many together.
We’ll have to wait to give other students this experience; in the meantime, we’ll have to look closer to home to continue to give that same feeling of connectedness, of oneness, of humanity.
