How long after the end of the school year before you begin missing rehearsal?
One week? Two weeks? A month?
I’ve been out of rehearsals for three weeks now, and I am still enjoying the respite; but I know that soon I’ll miss the growth that happens in rehearsal. I’ll miss introducing new repertoire, I’ll miss teaching musical concepts, I’ll miss the frustration and the joy of getting pieces to performance-ready.
The thing about being a music educator is that you have to love the rehearsal more than the final product. If you love performance but not rehearsal, then this career is a long slog. But if you love rehearsal then it is sustainable to do this as a career, because you can maintain energy across the long weeks between concerts.
