Collaboration is leverage. The only way that average members of society can counterbalance the power of extreme wealth is with the power of working together.
That’s why I proudly joined my college faculty union the day I was hired at GRCC, and why my family keeps paying significant union dues despite it no longer being mandatory to do so. (Indeed, it’s gotten increasingly difficult to remain a member over the years. But we remain.
When we look back at the proud heritage of the changes accomplished thanks to unionized workers, I hope you are as proud as I am of the achievements of people working together in the past.
It seems to me that the need for unions – formal and informal – is ever greater. Let’s work together. Happy Labor Day.
Ideas for today:
- Join a Labor Day march in celebration of the US Labor Movement.
- Rejoin your union if your membership has lapsed.
- Make a small donation to your union’s lobbying arm, if one exists.
- Write your elected leaders in support of Labor.
