Have you tried whisking left-handed recently? (For me, that’s whisking right-handed…what I mean is your non-dominant hand.)
It feels weird. I’m pretty agile with kitchen tools, but in my “wrong” hand, I feel like a novice all over again. I sometimes do just that, to remind myself the way that repeated practice on top of a slight bias can produce big results.
But what never occurred to me until today is that, for an actual novice, that’s what it feels like in their dominant hand. The bias of their handedness isn’t enough to overcome the unfamiliarity.
That’s a lesson I can carry with me to hold space and compassion, and to offer encouragement, to novices as they tackle a new skill.
