It’s an important skill to make a mistake and keep going.
We practice stopping when we make a mistake in rehearsal. Of course we do – that’s how we correct mistakes. But that also means that when we inevitably make a mistake in performance, we have not practiced what to do in that situation.
#1 – Remember it’s a number’s game. You have a lot of notes to sing, just keep your percentages high.
#2 – Have situational awareness. Know how to figure out how to course correct in real time. That means more intimate music literacy; the more you understand, the more you can course correct.
#3 – Practice distracted. Performing well in rehearsal while distractions are happening bodes well for performance. That’s why I’ll sometimes “drop” something loud in rehearsal, or do reharmonized vocal warmups.
