Just Today

The day is very rare that you can focus on just today.

That’s one of the less obvious reasons I like concert days. Especially big concerts like my annual Aces Concert, the work of the concert is consuming enough that you must remain in today-mode.

But most times, you have to be focusing on three or four days:

  • Today
  • Tomorrow
  • One week from today
  • One month from today

Maybe also six months or a year requires your attention. Maybe a day even farther out!

How do you keep these all straight in your head? I think the best bet is to isolate them, rather than try to multitask all at once. I like the “tomorrow first” mentality as an operating principle, and I like reminding myself to spend more energy on the important than the urgent.

I’m going to spend a lot of this summer focusing on four days, but I’m also going to prioritize at least occasionally committing to just today. Those days, even when very busy, carry a certain peace.
