The right amount of self-discipline is just enough.
I have enough self-discipline to write here daily since 2014, to create new monthly compositions and arrangements for my Patreon, to plan weekly, monthly, yearly, and multi-year projects.
I have enough discipline to write daily, but not enough discipline to consistently write before my late-evening rehearsal. I routinely get home on Thursday nights and say, “Why didn’t I write my post earlier?!” I’m tired from a 16-hour day, and would have been more alert to write earlier; but I didn’t have enough discipline for that. I have just enough discipline to get the job done.
I think having just enough discpline is probably the only amount possible, though. Like everyone, I’m juggling a lot of projects, deadlines, and responsibilities. I have to have enough discipline to get the job done, but any more than that is a surplus I will find another use for. I simply can’t spare it.
Don’t get angry at yourself for procrastination or lack of self-discipline. If you’re getting the job finished, you are showing you have just enough discipline, and that every other scrap of time and energy is being spent elsewhere.
I had enough discipline to get this done, late as it is. And now – on to the next job. (Which won’t be tomorrow’s post, rest assured.)
