Intermittent Creativity

Creativity doesn’t need huge blocks of time.

Yesterday I sat and wrote in some short bursts as I was cleaning the basement. This morning I wrote a 16-bar sax soli while more or less simultaneously making breakfast. By necessity, I’m often doing creative work in small chunks of time between meetings, errands, or other commitments.

That’s not to say I don’t appreciate a nice quiet stretch of time to work. It feels luxurious to have a two-hour creative block, and I love to settle into those times. But I have learned over years of work that it’s not essential.

You can be creative in the time available to you.
