How do you know it’s your passion?
I have written music at every hour of the day and night. I have the times I gravitate towards in 2023, but 2013 me used different parts of the day, and 2003 me was frantically writing a thesis and arrangements for class – all night if I needed to.
These days, I write in gaps among my many responsibilities. I write while I’m waiting for the dryer to finish, or for the bread to finish baking. I write when I can steal 10 minutes with a notebook and a piano, or when I’ve got four hours in my studio to dig in with Dorico or Pro Tools. My schedule isn’t receptive to regular time, so I’ve learned to be creative in my writing whenever the universe gives me time.
And when the universe doesn’t give me time? I wish I was writing. When I have a busy week and don’t get a minute to write music, I start thinking about it more, start looking for the temporal space.
That’s as good a sign as I can find that this is work I’m called to do.
