Growth Isn’t Linear

We think of growth as linear – a step forward, then another step, then another.

Growth isn’t linear. There are long portions of the learning process when no growth may be evident, but much is invisbly happening. Then one day, the learner makes a seemingly sudden leap forward – the leap forward anticipated by the previously invisible growth.

Today my students gave a performance at Solo & Ensemble that I’m not sure they knew they were capable of. It was a performance to be proud of, and a surprise that I think lifted their spirits after weeks of struggle to grow in which they couldn’t see the results.

Understanding that, I think, can be a game changer. Know that you can’t expect to hear or see the results today; put in the work anyway, and trust that sudden growth is waiting for you down the road.
