I was so fortunate to spend Tuesday evening in a 2+ hour Zoom masterclass from the wonderful Dr. Kate Reid, Director of the Jazz Vocal program at the University of Miami Frost School of Music.
She worked with each of my Shades of Blue students on a solo jazz song that they had prepared, and concluded with some open Q&A.
I loved many things about the masterclass – the constructive and positive feedback, the way she so effectively defused students’ fear, and of course the way she brought her wealth of knowledge to really inspire and teach.
But maybe the best thing about this masterclass – about any great masterclass – is the fresh perspective. Guest masters bring a new way of looking at familiar problems, both for students and their teachers. They light a fire of curiosity and of intention that helps me to keep moving forward. My hope is that my students were inspired to do the same.
