FFTs

Dr. Brené Brown launched two podcasts in 2020, including the wonderful Unlocking Us. On the very first episode, she introduced us to her idea of FFTs (the FT stands for “First Time”). She outlines the various ways that dealing with a first-time experience can affect our lives, and gives great perspective on how to anticipate and plan for these FFTs.

It’s clear that all of us are experiencing a lot of FFTs – throughout 2020, to be sure, and even now as 2021 dawns. I’ve never witnessed a white supremacist attempted coup of the USA, for example.

I highly encourage everyone to take the time to listen to this March episode of Unlocking Us, as well as the December episode where she expands on her ideas.

If you’re experiencing an FFT (and you are!) – recognize it and name it. Then follow Dr. Brown’s steps:

  1. Normalize it.
  2. Put it in perspective.
  3. Reality check your expectations.
  4. Build in rest and recovery time
  5. Get and stay in fit FFT condition.
