Excess Yesness

Yesness should come with a caveat.

I love yesness in students. I love it in colleagues. I love it in myself.

But yesness can be a dangerous attribute if it’s not paired with some self-knowledge and personal responsibility.

When you say yes but don’t actually have time, you are hurting the people you said yes to. When you say yes but are in a bad mental space, you will hurt yourself further along the way. When you say yes but don’t have the ability to complete it successfully, you will disappoint yourself and others.

Sometimes you say yes before you know how to do something – great! That’s an opportunity to grow. But you must have a realistic sense of what you can accomplish. A realistic sense of your mental, physical, and temporal abilities.
