Don’t Get Bogged Down

We owe it to our students to stay above.

It’s pretty easy, here in the depths of February, to get stuck in the details. The basics of building your ensemble are set, they understand the routines, and the music is ramping up to the best music you’ll make this year.

I personally can get too focused on the details of making the music as good as it can be at this part of the year. Like every conductor I know, I can always find one more thing to polish. Or three. Or ten.

But there’s something more important than that one more detail. And that is to make sure we all remember why we’re here.

We’re together in choir because we love it. We love singing, we love camaraderie, we love the community of singing.

If we as leaders aren’t taking at least a moment to celebrate that shared love, we are losing an opportunity. And we’re risking alienating these people from this thing they love.
