Don’t Forget Why You Love It

There’s that middle part where it’s easy to forget.

Many of my students are in the middle of musical rehearsals right now. They have been rehearsing since the beginning of January, with opening night a couple weeks away.

This is the moment, in my experience, where it seems impossible that they’ll ever get out the other side. The intense rehearsal process has lost it’s newness and now feels like a slog.

At the beginning, it’s fresh and exciting. At the end, it’s polished and exciting.

In the middle, remind yourself why you love it. Make a list, talk to someone about it, do whatever you can to rekindle the love you know is in there.

It will make the slog a lot easier to handle.

This goes, of course, for any long process – rehearsals but also school years, compositions, writing a book, and just about any other journey you take. Even literally journeys like long hikes!
