If there’s one thing I think you must do to be a good teacher, it’s this.
Leave them more curious than you find them.
In music, science, literature, mathematics, and every other subject you can name, there are two basic attitudes we can adopt as teachers.
- Make sure that all subject matter is successfully conveyed to the students.
- Guide the students to get curious about the subject.
Fostering curiosity is harder, more prone to occasional failure, and has a lot more chaos and churn along the way. It also turns out curious humans who will use that curiosity to grow and succeed.
Curiosity is a superpower that can be taught. Why would you not?
