Disposable/Recoverable

Failure isn’t a sign to quit. It’s a sign to rebuild.

I found a rusty cast iron skillet on the street a while back, by a trash can waiting to get picked up. Knowing the way to fix it, I carried it the rest of my walk; not very long afterwards I had a pristine skillet, as good as new. Better, even. Now, if I had found an old, scratched nonstick pan, I would have walked right on by. They aren’t fixable.

We can tend to look at failures in our life like scratched nonstick pans. Time to dispose of the aspiration, and move on to something new. I know a lot of singers who take disappointment (a lost audition, for example) as a sign that their passion should be disposed of.

The truth is, our failures are like bits of rust on a cast iron skillet. Signs of weakness, to be sure. But fixable with care and determination. You can end up stronger and better, if you commit to the process.
