Directing Your Own Kids

Nothing better.

I admit I was anxious going into it – how to balance the parental relationship and the directorial relationship, how to maintain work/life boundaries, how to be sure you’re on time to rehearsal when you’re bringing your own kid!

In the end, it has been an unmitigated joy to teach and direct my own kids. Our relationships have deepened, our perspectives have changed, and (of course) the joy of making music with a choir is even more beautiful when you can look up and see your kid smiling back at you.

When I hugged my senior tonight after his last concert with the Aces, I just felt unbelievable thankful that I had gotten the chance to experience it with him.
