It’s good to be reminded how different we are.
One of my most deeply valued groups on social media is the Dorico Users Group. I actually joined several years before I bought Dorico, and it was being a member that made me decide Dorico was right for me. Recently it’s been full of an influx of new Dorico users in the wake of Finale’s impending destruction. And in the process, I’ve been remarking on how different the music makers’ needs are – because what they make is so different.
I have seen choral writers and orchestral and film writers, of course. But also composers of chance music and non-tonal music and pictographic notation, but also composers who write with full 17th Century-style figured bass. I’ve seen questions about notating for unusual instruments, unusual meters, and unusual outputs.
So often, I think, “I’m never ever going to need the answer to their question.” And that’s kind of beautiful. We are all making our own music, and the differences between us is a source of beauty.
