With ensembles that don’t have enough rehearsal time, they should always practice with a bias towards memorization.
That means repetition of shorter excerpts, getting their eyes out of the score, focusing on lyrics, intellectually contrasting similar-but-not-identical sections, and more.
There are many different motivations to draw our focus in rehearsal. Don’t let memorization lose out until it’s too late!
