I’d rather have no chocolate than bad chocolate. (For me, that means no Hershey’s bars, but you can draw your own line! Throughout this piece, I’m using bad as a shorthand meaning “not for me.”)
I’d rather watch no television than bad television. I’d rather listen to no music than bad music. I’d rather take no action than take bad action.
It’s important to have standards – to have benchmarks for the things you consume.
But on the other hand, I’d rather make bad music than make no music at all. That’s another reason I know I’m in the right career – because the process of making music bring me joy all on its own. Of course, making bad music can be a step on the road to making good music – in a way completely different than the difference between bad and good chocolate (A Hershey Bar will never become a Belgian chocolate praline.)
