Look for an art you can be bad at. Or at least, not professional.
Art for art’s sake, without worry about monetization or external success, is a balm. It’s maybe the most human form of play – playing with an artistic medium. At the moment, I’m working on a collaborative flip book, finishing pages that I’m just happy enough with to share with my collaborators. I don’t think I’ll ever monetize my drawing, but it gives me great joy to try to make the art the best I can.
I think we all need such an artistic outlet – professional artists perhaps most of all.
And conversely, I think choral singing is the most readily available art form to meet that need for most adult humans. With a reasonable time commitment, we can collaborate, make art, and release the tension of the day. And while I want every chorus singer to strive to do their best, making art that’s good enough is an admirable goal.
