Great music is for everyone.
I had a substantial conversation recently with a non-religious chorister who struggled mightily with singing the Vivaldi Gloria. The expression of “glory to God” was deeply unsettling to their convictions.
In my opinion, the Gloria is a stellar piece of music and deserves to be sung and appreciated, whether you agree with its original message or not. Appreciate it for the architecture.
I don’t need to worship Roman gods to appreciate the Pantheon, or Christian to be in awe of La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona or St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. I don’t need to be Muslim to appreciate the Taj Mahal or Buddhist to respect the Tiger’s Nest in Paro, Bhutan.
Appreciate the artistry, the vision, the craft, the labor. Appreciate the architecture.
