Alternate Days

Training experts tell you to alternate days when training; that is, exercise different muscle groups on consecutive days, so that the muscles have sufficient time to recover from intense workouts before they are exercised again.

There is a lot of wisdom in that – beyond personal fitness. While many personal practices benefit from a daily commitment, it’s worth recognizing what practices would benefit from an alternate day commitment.

I do yoga every day, but I don’t write music every day.

I walk every day, but I don’t eat dessert every day.

I brush my teeth every day, but I don’t check Facebook every day.

I read every day, but I don’t have 2-hour choral rehearsals every day.

I write every day, but I don’t perform every day.

You have different things you’ve committed to doing every day, and things that benefit from concerted but not daily effort. How do you decide? Is it just what you settled on, or did you make decisions based on what the work requires?
