Already Doing the Work

It’s my wife’s birthday, and she did a Facebook birthday fundraiser, inviting friends to support a GoFundMe devoted to raising court costs to help transgender youths in Grand Rapids get their names legally changed.

Part of the reason that the fundraiser has raised over $1,100 in the last 12 hours is that Mandy’s voice is trusted and she is well-loved by so many people. Part of it is that it’s Pride Month and people are looking for concrete ways to support trans youth.

And part of it is that this isn’t a fundraiser to create something new. My fabulous sister-in-law, who represents these clients pro bono, has been doing this work for trans youth for over a year; she’s represented nearly 20 in the Grand Rapids area, navigating them knowledgeably and lovingly through the complex process. The donations are allowing her to continue the good work she’s doing, so people know that their donations will be used for good.

She’s already doing the work.

What work do you want to do that will require help? How can you start doing the work now, so that when you ask for help, you’re already doing the work, too?
