Advocacy Monday #6

It’s Monday! That means taking a minute to advocate for music education.

Okay, this is a hard one. But it’s just an email – you can do it.

Who are the people who can get things done in your school district? Not the Superintendent – they’ve got too many things on their plate already. But as close to them as you can. Maybe it’s an Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum or for HR or for Finance. Maybe it’s a principal or an Arts Administrator. (If you’re lucky!)

You’re going to email and ask for a 15 minute meeting before school starts. Here’s the entire email:

Hi!

Now that it’s August, we’re all back in full work mode getting ready for the start of the school year! With that, I wonder if we could setup 15 minute to look a little farther ahead than the first day. Specifically, I would love to talk about the following things:

  1. Understanding the value of arts education, how can we increase the impact of arts education in our district?
  2. If I want to advocate for more attention, publicity, and monetary support for the arts departments, what is the right timeline to do that work?
  3. I’d like to share my perspective with you on where our district is strong and where it can grow in the arts.

As you know, once school starts my head is down, focusing on teaching, and I won’t look up again until June. NOW is the time to strategize! I look forward to meeting with you!

Sincerely,
