A leader doesn’t have just one job.
The first job, of course, is to use domain knowledge to make sure the team succeeds.
But without your additional jobs, you can do a lot of damage on the way, even as your team succeeds.
Job 2: help encourage each individual to reach their potential.
Job 3: create an environment where no one feels demeaned or discouraged by your leadership or by the behavior of their teammates.
These are coequal goals; we can’t neglect any of them. And I think they’re equally necessary whether you’re leading a second-grade class, a choir, or a football team.
