3 Things

This approach is magical in the way it engages an ensemble in its own growth.

My ensembles know that before a full run of a piece, I’ll poll the ensemble for “3 things.”

3 things they want to improve on from previous runs. The things might be specific (“That E-flat in measure 17”) or more overarching (“Phrasing” or “Tempo”).

Asking, rather than telling, gives me several things.

First, it lets me know what they’re paying attention to.

Second, it teaches them to be musical leaders with opinions and motivation.

Third, it engages their minds more thoroughly.

Fourth, it lets the ensemble take ownership of setting the bar. (Wouldn’t you know it, oftentimes the ensemble sets the bar higher than the conductor does!)
