You Don’t Notice the Gaps

Streaks are brilliant motivators, but at a certain point their meanings change.

What I mean is, over time the reality of the streak decreases in importance compared to the feeling of the streak.

Once you’ve practiced a thousand days in a row, you might accidentally take a day off – and not notice. You won’t notice the impact on your singing or playing, you won’t notice the gap in your streak!

In my book, your streak is still alive at that point, despite the missed day. The feeling of the streak is still there. The consistency is still alive, the streak is still a motivator, and the impact is minimal.

However: you earn this gap in your streak by showing up again and again, building a granite foundation that can support the small gap.

(I confess I am writing this 7 months after May 16, because I’m just now noticing the gap. It’s an easter egg for close readers!)
