Turn off your training once in a while.
I’m lucky to spend a fair bit of time around young musicians. And I’m lucky to often share good music with them for the first time. Because of that, I get to elicit a respectable number of “Wow” moments.
I admit that it’s sometime hard for me to slow my brain long enough to find “wow” moments myself. First, I have to tune out of my to do list, my projects, my rehearsal planning. Second, I have to release my musically trained mind that keeps me assessing and analyzing.
Third, I have to find music that wows me. That wows that fresh-eared musician inside me who loves music because music is amazing. The me I was when I was where my students are now.
I’m trying to find more time to do just that: to refresh myself with music and to find the wow that brought me to music in the first place.
I urge you to do the same!
