A long time ago, I created a mnemonic for teaching the order of whole-steps and half-steps in a major scale.
We Were Happy When We Were Here.
(I usually couple it with a joke along the lines of, “Hopefully you’ll say this about your time in this class…”)
When, last Monday, I was teaching the overview of the whole tone scale, it occurred to me that I didn’t have a mnemonic for it.
As soon as I mentioned it, a clever student offered the perfect solution.
The order of whole-steps and half-steps in the whole tone scale can be easily remembered with this:
Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why?
Pretty good.
