There are lots of reasons to commission new works.
Commission to celebrate a milestone.
Commission to honor a friend or alum of your ensemble.
Commission to support a composer whose work you value.
Commission to bring attention to your program.
Commission to educate your students on the living, breathing process of creative music-making.
Commission to inspire your students in their own creations.
These are all great reasons. But really, there’s only one reason:
Commission new music because that’s the only way new music gets written. Every piece you ever program was commissioned. Only by continuing this process can we ensure that the next great art gets written.
