I support artists on Patreon because of what’s in it for them. I love that a few dollars pledged monthly can give artists a steady income, enabling them to devote more time to their craft.
But it’s easy to understand the “What’s in it for me” mindset. Like any voluntary subscription, we are free to ask what we have to gain from subscribing.
I’ve tried to structure my own Patreon to give lots of rewards for the members of the community – from access to every score I write to special posts about process to recognition in published scores. There’s even a tier where you get to choose the piece I write one month per year, essentially getting a commission for a very low price.
What’s in it for me? It gives me accountability for my own commitment to growth as a composer and arranger. It connects me with a community of people who support my endeavors. And by the end of 2021, it will have given me 10 new pieces that I wouldn’t have otherwise written. I basically don’t write music except on commission, and this Patreon gives me the liberty to prioritize additional time devoted to writing, and to have a community of “commissioning parties” to write for.
