We Shall Overcome is perhaps the most iconic protest song of all time – a sweet, potent melody and an equally potent lyric that have been used worldwide as a rallying cry, though it’s probably most strongly associated with the 1960’s Civil Rights Movement; Joan Baez famously sang it as part of the August, 1963 March on Washington that saw Rev. King deliver his “I Have a Dream” speech.
We shall overcome, we shall overcome,
We shall overcome someday.
Deep in my heart, I do believe
We shall overcome someday.
It’s the kind of song that makes you want to sing along, and while everyone is singing together, you know you can get something done.
Dr. Jason Max Ferdinand’s Aeolians of Oakwood University are widely hailed as one of the best choirs in the world (check out their immediately legendary performance at ACDA 2019). This virtual choir is ample proof, and the song choice is perfect (and so is the powerful arrangement by Robert T. Gibson). It’s what my soul needed tonight.
“Hold on, and we’ll get through this together.” – Dr. Jason Max Ferdinand
