Urgency

Find a way to create a sense of urgency: it’s among the most powerful motivators for your choir.

To feel a sense of urgency, there are multiple pieces that must all be in play:

  • A sense of ownership of the music.
  • The desire to give a positive performance.
  • Perception of high stakes.
  • The ability to take the steps to reach the goal.

When all of these are put together, all you need is a reason to feel a sense of urgency. This can be found in many situations:

  • The concert is this week, and this is our last rehearsal.
  • We have a limited number of rehearsals to learn all of this music – from memory.
  • We are reuniting to learn a piece in one rehearsal to perform – tomorrow.
  • Someone new is hearing you sing for the first time.

Put it all together, and it’s as if someone turns on your choir’s turbo jets: they rocket forward, moving further and faster than they otherwise thought they could.
