The best ensembles are both unified and in the moment.
We work hard to find a unified sound for the ensemble, but sometimes at the expense of in-the-moment-singing, instead settling into wooden performances that reflect the rehearsal. We need to engage more active listening to what’s happening around us, and practice reacting to what we hear.
The best ensembles transcend their rehearsal to bring performances to life that reflect what they are feeling and hearing in that moment. And with that, they are more able to create a direct connection with an audience that is part of that same moment.
Practice active listening and reactive singing (ideally, conductorless) to unlock more active and reactive singing in your students.
