I love to read and hear about individual’s creative process. (A beloved read was Daily Rituals: How Artists Work by Mason Currey.) I regularly listen to podcasts by Tim Ferriss, Adam Grant, and Debbie Millman because they involve deep dives into the daily habits of creative people.
But in my experience, all habits are transitory. If I wrote an essay about my daily creative rituals in 2021, they would only be somewhat related to my habits in 2016, 2011, or 2001. My rituals were affected by the work I was doing, my other commitments, my family, the seasons, and on and on.
These days, I think more about my current creative ritual, and respect the understanding that they might be different in a few years or a few months. I lean into the ritual, but anticipate that it will eventually change. Long-term consistency in the ritual is less important than responsiveness to the needs of the moment.
