Three Kinds of Music to Write

All the music I write falls into one of these three categories.

  1. Write the music only you can write. The music that’s particular to you in some or all ways, because it reflects a richness of life and musical experience.
  2. Write the music that someone needs. There is plenty of work that any capable musician can write; do it as well as you can to effectively serve the musicians you’re collaborating with.
  3. Write the music that teaches what you want to teach. Ensemble instructors are concept teachers as much as they are repertoire teachers, and there is great value in writing music that facilitates the teaching of those concepts.

Clearly defining the categories helps you to assess each creative project and bring the skills and perspective that project needs.
