We don’t discover new musical artists because we stumble across them. Over and over, it’s because someone who loves the artist gets us puts the right song in front of us.
Without the right song, we are not likely to keep listening. Without the right enthusiast, we aren’t likely to hear of an artist (especially as the availability of recorded music explodes with streaming platforms).
So, from the other side, how would you convince someone to check out your favorite singer? Do you know what song you would pick?
It’s a complicated calculus: you have to think of the taste of your audience, the message of the song, the accessibility of the song, how well the song represents the artist, and many more factors.
But when you do it right, you have expanded the horizons of another listener. It’s a superpower and one to take seriously.
